Few people are natural salesmen, and yet the very act job searching requires that we become master salesmen, in order to sell our skills and abilities to potential employers. Many people choose to abdicate this responsibility though, choosing instead to just sign up with employment agencies, and let them do the work. One of the most effective ways of landing your next job, is to call the employers directly. Cold calling employers directly certainly takes more courage, but is second only to networking as a great way to find out about vacancies, even before they are advertised.
There are two main techniques for making cold contacts with employers.
First, you can use your local yellow pages, business directory or the internet to find potential employers. The best way to come up with a list, is to ask a simple question. “What type of company or organisation might need a person with my sort of skills?”. Once you have an initial list, it is easier to find their competitors, and even their suppliers. Online directories and yellow pages usually group companies by industry, or type, making it fairly easy to compile a long list.
Once you start calling the companies, ask to speak to the person most likely to supervise or hire you. In small organisations, it is usually the business manager while department heads are more typical in larger firms. Do not try and speak directly to human resources or personnel managers. In many cases, even they are not aware that the vacancy exists within their own organisation.
Alternatively, you can totally eschew the telephone, and just turn up without an appointment. This method is particularly effective with small businesses, but also works surprisingly well even with larger organisations. Visit the business, and ask to speak to the person in charge. Always ask for an interview, even where there are no current job offerings. You want to leave such a good impression that your name is at the top of a very short list when a job opening does eventually appear.
Recruitment is an expensive process for employers, both in terms of time and money. Companies will therefore leap at any chance they can get to hire talented individuals without going through these traditional recruitment methods. Someone taking their fate into their own hands and cold calling employers is also signalling that they are a go-getting individual, who is not afraid to jump into the deep end and get things done.
